Kim Jong-un expands North Korea's satellite launch facility

{O/C} In North Korea, leader Kim Jong-un ordered his officials to expand a satellite launch facility amid word the country is currently testing a new intercontinental ballistic missile system.

The expanded satellite launch facility is expected to be used for firing a variety of rockets, albeit violating U.N. resolutions.

Such a rocket launch would be the North's most significant provocation since late 2017 and a violation of its self-imposed moratorium on long-range and nuclear missile launches.

North Korea's neighbours reported frequent missile tests in about a month's time.

Meantime, the United States and South Korea both concluded that the North's two recent launches involved an intercontinental ballistic missile system first unveiled during a military parade back in October 2020.

The U.S. military says it has ordered intensified surveillance activities off the Korean Peninisula's West Coast to monitor the North's launches, in addition to enhancing the country's preparedness in order to counter the North's threat.
