Kentucky swamped by massive floods

{O/C} Parts of Kentucky are completely submerged today after record floods walloped entire communities.

Kentucky's Governor, who toured the disaster area earlier, said 15 people, including children, have perished, and that the death toll would climb.

Over fifty air rescuers and hundreds of water rescuers were carried out on Thursday, with more underway to assist the stranded.

Torrential rain smothered the region, triggering mudslides and flash floods.

More than 200 soaked residents have sought shelter as buildings and roads were completely inundated.

The National Guard has been mobilised to reach the hardest-hit regions.

And the floods won't call it quits until, at the earliest, tomorrow.

ANDY BESHEAR, Kentucky's Governor:

This is, by far, the worst flooding disaster at least of my lifetime in Kentucky.

It has wiped out, what I believe, hundreds of homes.

We have half of some of our counties under water.

We're going to lose double-digit lives.
