{O/C} History was made today when Italy's first female, far-right premier was sworn in.

45-year-old Giorgia Meloni recited the oath of office before President Sergio Mattarella, who had formally asked her to form a new government.

Now, her Brothers of Italy party with neo-fascist roots will form a coalition alongside the right-wing League of Matteo Salvini and the conservative Forza Italia party, led by former Premier Silvio Berlusconi.

The first woman to serve in the position of Premier, Meloni has insisted that national interests prevail over EU policies in the event of conflict, and has also blasted EU bureaucracy.

Still, The EU Commission President sounded a note of optimism in a congratulatory tweet to Meloni right after the swearing-in ceremony, saying she anticipates "constructive cooperation" on future hurdles.
