India scours sea for people from a sunken barge and an adrift cargo vessel

The Indian navy is now working to rescue crew members from a sunken barge and a second cargo vessel that was adrift on Tuesday off the coast of Mumbai as a result of the deadly cyclone Tauktae.

Packed sustained winds of up to 130 miles per hour, cyclone Tauktae was the most powerful storm to hit the region in more than two decades. Four people were killed in the state, raising the total number of fatalities to 16.

The Indian navy said it had rescued 177 people of the total 400 on the two barges in the Arabia Sea. Three frontline warships, maritime patrol aircraft and helicopters were sent to assist in the search, as the navy has been scouring the sea to search for the missing crew members.

India’s Meteorological Department forecast heavy rainfall for many parts of Gujarat and Maharashtra in the coming days.

About 150,000 people were evacuated from low-lying areas in both states in the face of the most powerful storm on record. With supply lines cut, roads destroyed, and debris everywhere, the disaster response teams now fear the storm could endanger India’s fight against the coronavirus.
