House backs commission on Jan. 6 riot despite GOP objections

The U.S. House of Representatives voted to create an independent commission on the deadly January 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol despite Republicans’ objections. But that is sending the legislation’s future in the Senate to a limbo.

Democrats remain adamant an independent investigation is crucial to reckoning what happened that day, when a violent mob of Trump’s supporters smashed into the Capitol to try and overturn President Joe Biden’s victory in the 2020 U.S. Presidential Election. That came after former President Donald Trump gave a speech during which he said something that was believed to have incited the crowd.

The bill passed the House on Wednesday, 252-175, with 35 Republicans siding with the Democrats, defying Trump, and voted in favour of the bill.

Trump earlier issued a statement, saying the legislation was a “Democrat trap”, and he urged Republicans to vote against it.
