The crash happened at around 7 a.m. on Saturday. Police identified all the five victims, two of whom were the parents of a prison transport officer with the Albuquerque Police Department.
The balloon was seen hitting a power line and then crashed onto a busy street in New Mexico. The intersection where the crash happened was still cordoned off later Saturday afternoon.
The multicoloured balloon eventually landed on a residential rooftop.
The balloon hit the power lines, sending at least one dangling and temporarily knocking out power to more than 13,000 homes in the area.
Authorities have yet to determine what caused the crash. The National Transportation Safety Board sent two investigators to the scene on Saturday to do their own investigation on site. A preliminary report is expected to be released in a couple of weeks.
