The top U.S. infectious-disease expert, Anthony Fauci, sent a dose of encouraging news today that while the Omicron variant appears more contagious, data from various studies suggests Omicron is less severe when compared with Delta.
This comes as the situation in the United States took a turn for the worse today, with the country registering some 265,000 cases - the highest level on record.

Since the United States turbocharged its vaccine rollout, the United States has to contend with another onerous task as the highest level of daily infections - 265,000 cases a day - added insult to injury.
Although the speed at which the virus is spread by Omicron is truly mind-boggling, Dr. Anthony Fauci, the top U.S. infectious-disease expert, said today that data from numerous studies are indicative of a lesser severity of the Omicron variant when compared with the previously-dominant strain - the Delta variant.
The studies bear witness to the fact that Omicron is less severe, given fewer admissions to the ICU among patients who fell victim to Omicron.
Making no bones about the consequences of not getting vaccinated, Fauci suggested that Americans not be intent on passing up vaccines and adhere strictly to anti-virus measures.
As such, unvaccinated COVID patients comprise the lion's share of hospitalizations in America.
Another reason for the yawning gap between the increase in hospitalisations and cases is that hospitalisations tend to lag behind recorded cases, according to Fauci.
Taking the long view though, COVID does have a noxious influence on America's economy, as there're no green shoots thus far.
In California, having been caught between a rock and a hard place, the Governor announced that San Francisco will now require law enforcement in certain settings and others in higher-risk workplaces to get boosted by February 1st as the city has the front-row seat to the depredations of COVID-19.
San Francisco also listed professions that are not subject to the changes, which encompass healthcare workers.
What's more, most COVID-19 hospitalisations are deemed preventable, so they are much worse than those at the outset.
The World Health Organisation reported that new COVID-19 infections worldwide ballooned by 11 percent last week from the previous week. But a decline was reported in South Africa, where the Omicron variant was discovered early this month.
Given that ridding the world of COVID remains a pious hope, the world needs to be on its a-game in order to eradicate COVID through and through.
