In Portland, Oregon, a record high of 108 degrees was reported on Saturday afternoon.
And in Seattle, where temperatures are usually around 51 degrees, reached 101 degrees on Saturday, making it the hottest June day ever. It was the fourth time in recorded history that the usually temperate city had topped 100 degrees.
Other states close by are also expected to break records, with temperatures in many areas likely to rise above the 100-degree level.
In Seattle, stores sold out of portable air conditioners and fans. Faced with possibly scorching hot temperatures later this week, Seattle residents searched every nook and cranny to get an air conditioner.
Forecasters say unusually hot weather is expected to extend into next week for much of the region.
