It was a spasm of emotions at Rayan's funeral as relatives and others from near and far mourned his tragic death.
As the ambulance arrived at the gravesite with the boy's corpse, people were heard chanting, "Rayan is our beloved." His father could scarcely walk as he approached his son's casket, solemnly observing the coffin being lowered into the grave, then covered with soil and tree branches.
The funeral took place shortly after prayers yesterday in a village in Morocco's mountainous north.
The boy was laid to rest in a plot where other family members of his are buried.
The exact circumstances of how he fell in the well remain unclear. But to illustrate how Rayan's fate had gripped the entire country, Moroccan King Mohammed VI watched the painstaking rescue efforts closely, and did express his condolences to the boy's parents in a statement released by the palace.
