He had carried out a murderous rampage in the vicinity, starting with the fatal stabbing of a 66-year-old woman on Thursday afternoon.
Witnesses say another woman fell while being chased by the suspect, who then stabbed her with a knife.
That's when the suspect opened fire on police officers with a hunting rifle as they arrived.
In the aftermath, four people were killed, including two of the officers.
After the rampage, the suspect fled on foot and barricaded himself in his father's house, the vicinity of which was sealed off, in a 12-hour standoff that ended early this morning.
Sources say the suspect is the son of Nakano City assembly speaker Masamichi Aoki.
Neighbours insist, the suspect is a quiet person and that they are not aware of any family feud.
Nakano's police chief expressed condolences to the victims' families and called the killings an "extremely vicious crime."
Police say the suspect has permits to possess four firearms.
Investigators say the suspect has confessed to the knife attack, and claims he thought he was being disparaged.
Violent crimes are rare in Japan because gun control laws there are strict.
