Former Chinese official sentenced to death with two-year reprieve

{O/C} A former vice minister of public security has been handed the death penalty with a two-year reprieve in a Jilin court following an anti-corruption investigation.

Sun Lijun was found guilty of taking bribes, illegally manipulating the stock market and possessing firearms.


The Intermediate People's Court of Changchun in Jilin Province also deprived him of his his political rights for life, and confiscated all his personal assets.


The court noted that Sun received money and valuable worth more than 646 million yuan from 2001 to April of 2020.


But factoring in his confession of crimes, repentance and providing clues to other major cases, the court granted him a two-year reprieve for his death sentence, which can be later commuted to life in prison.
