Florida braces for hurricane Idalia

Residents in the U.S. state of Florida are battening down the hatches for hurricane Idalia.

Idalia strengthened into a hurricane on Tuesday and is expected to strike Florida on Wednesday as a Category 3 hurricane with winds of up to 120 miles per hour.

This would deal a huge blow to Florida which is still reeling from damage from last year's Hurricane Ian.

Governor Ron DeSantis has declared a state of emergency in 46 counties with mandatory evacuation orders in place for residents in low-lying areas.

That's where residents lined up for sandbags to protect their homes and businesses.

Air traffic and rail service around the area have been suspended.

Earlier, Idalia lashed Cuba with incessant rains, triggering heavy flooding and the evacuation of residents in western Cuba.
