{O/C} U.S. President Joe Biden has nominated well-regarded appeals court judge, Ketanji Brown Jackson, as the first Black female to take up the position of a Supreme Court Judge.
{SOT}
{Soundbite} JOE BIDEN, U.S. President: It's my honor to introduce to the country a daughter of former public school teachers, a proven consensus builder, an accomplished lawyer, a distinguished jurist on one of the nation's most prestigious courts. My nominee for the United States Supreme Court is Judge Ketanji Jackson.
With that, the President has made good on his historic promise made on the campaign trail to let a Black woman serve as a Supreme Court Judge.
Biden didn't mince words in acknowledging this task was long overdue.
{Soundbite} For too long, our government, our courts haven't looked like America. And I believe it's time that we have a Court that reflects the full talents and greatness of our nation with a nominee of extraordinary qualifications.
The President touted Jackson as being a judge who would always do justice.
{Soundbite} She strives to be fair, to get it right, to do justice.
Taking pride of place, Jackson vowed, if she is to be confirmed to replace retiring Justice Stephen Breyer, she will champion the country's sacred principles fervently.
{Soundbite} KETANJI BROWN JACKSON, Supreme Court Nominee: I am truly humbled by the extraordinary honour of this nomination. If I'm fortunate enough to be confirmed as the next associate justice of the Supreme Court of the United States, I can only hope that my life and career, my love of this country and the Constitution and my commitment to upholding the rule of law and the sacred principles upon which this great nation was founded, will inspire future generations of Americans.
If Jackson is to succeed Breyer, she will be the current court's second Black member.
The sixth female to serve on the bench, she won't change the court's 6-3 conservative majority.
Sources say only a handful of Republicans - Susan Collins, Lindsey Graham and Lisa Murkowski - are all for her nomination.
Senate Minority Leader, Mitch McConnell, who voted against her nomination, has suggested a rigorous and exhaustive review of Jackson's nomination as befits a lifetime appointment to the Supreme Court.
Jackson is most notable for her stint as a trial judge on the Federal District Court in Washington, which will stand her in good stead.
What made her conspicuous is her role in the three-judge panel last year that torpedoed Trump's attempts to shield documents from the Jan. 6 probe.
