Tens of thousands of Indians were evacuated today in low-lying areas of two Indian states and moved to cyclone shelters as a powerful storm is barreling towards the eastern coast. This is the second storm to hit India in just around two weeks, and Indians are again battening down the hatches.
Cyclone Yaas is set to turn into a “very severe cyclonic storm” with sustained wind speeds of up to 110 miles per hour, or 177 kilometers per hour. The cyclone is expected to make landfall early Wednesday in Odisha and West Bengal states.
The cyclone is the second one in a month, right after Cyclone Tauktae.
Thousands of emergency personnel have been deployed in coastal regions of the two states for evacuation and any possible rescue operations.
This storm is expected to hamper efforts to curb a devastating surge in COVID infections in the country, just like what cyclone Tauktae did to India.
