A vote to elect his replacement is now slated for later this month as Mr. Sassoli had earlier indicated that he would not seek re-election.
Back in September, he had a bout of severe pneumonia and was taken to a hospital in Strasbourg for treatment.
Despite being gravely ill, he still resumed his political duties in November.
Sassoli became the President of the 705-seat European Parliament in July 2019. The role is considered one of the bloc's top jobs as it involves chairing sessions and overseeing the parliament's activities.
Condolences are pouring in from his stalwart allies and friends, including Ursula von der Leyen, the president of the European Commission.
He is credited with venturing upon endeavours to make the world a better and fairer place.
