Six people perished in a Montana highway pileup amid a dust storm that made for zero visibility.

Investigators have found no other factors aside from low visibility amid the dust storm.

It happened on Interstate 90, a major artery in Western U.S. where 21 vehicles, including semi-trucks, lost control in the dust storm aggravated by gusts eclipsing 97 kilometres per hour.

Two children were among the 6 deceased.

The other eight wounded were transported to nearby hospitals.

Governor Greg Gianforte tweeted he was distraught after the crash.

Before the pileup occurred, storms had already reared their ugly heads in southern Montana between 1 to 2 in the afternoon and began barrelling eastwards.
