Unbridled violence played out in the dead of the night in downtown Sacramento as a barrage of gunshots were fired off in the country's latest mass shooting.

The sound of gunfire that lasted at least 45 seconds reverberated across the outskirts of the city's downtown entertainment district.

{Soundbite} Police Officer: Multiple victims, CPR is in progress...

A fight was reported to have broken out on a street lined with an opulent hotel, nightclubs and bars prior to the shooting.

Witnesses say they ran for their lives.

{Soundbite} VICTOR MUNOZ, Eyewitness: All we heard were just gunshots, at least, automatic gun. After that, we heard gunshots fired back.

The shooting took place at around 2 a.m. Sunday local time right when bars and nightclubs were shutting down.

In all, six people were killed, with the 12 wounded transported to area hospitals.

{Soundbite} KATHY LESTER, Sacramento Police Chief: Around 2 a.m. this morning (Sunday), officers heard gunshots near 10th Street and K Street and saw people running. So we're asking for the public's help in helping us to identify suspects.

Offering his prayers, Sacramento's mayor portrayed this mass shooting as atrocious, calling for resilience and unity.

{Soundbite} DARRELL STEINBERG, Mayor of Sacramento: This is a senseless and unacceptable tragedy. And I emphasise the word "unacceptable." But thoughts and prayers are not nearly enough. We must do more, as a city, as a state and as a nation.

A large part of downtown Sacramento remains cordoned off as the police interview witnesses in the hopes the multiple perpetrators will be brought to justice.

The nub of the problem: The endemicity of mass shootings in America as this was the third mass shooting since the inception of the year.

The shooting has sent a shrill wave of terror throughout the mostly underrated city.
