The attack went down in the Kabul Longan hotel on Monday afternoon, as gunshots and explosions rang out, with smoke billowing high into the air.
The 10-storey hotel was then cordoned off by Taliban forces.
Hours later, the regional affiliate of ISIS claimed they had carried out the attack because it is frequented by diplomats and owned by "communist China".
The attack ended when the three assailants were killed.
At least eighteen others were injured and sent to hospital for treatment.
