Following a series of protests during which Cubans protested against high prices and food shortages, Cuban police are on high alert as they were out in force today on the country's streets.

The demonstrations came as the Cuban President accused Cuban Americans of utilising social media to spur a rare outpouring of weekend protests over high prices and food shortages in the country.
The protests erupted in several Cuban cities were considered some of the biggest displays of anti-government sentiment in tightly controlled Cuba, which is faced with a surge in COVID infections.
Authorities took a hard line on anti-government protests by detaining more than a dozen protesters, including a leading Cuban dissident who was trying to attend a march in Santiago.
Internet service in Cuba remained spotty, possibly indicating efforts to prevent protesters from asking more people to partake in anti-government protests.
In a statement on Monday, U.S. President Joe Biden said Cuban protesters should not have been arrested because they were simply asserting their basic rights, insinuating a crackdown on human rights in that country.
The demonstrations were extremely unusual because of the Cuban government's zero-tolerance stance on anti-government demonstrations.
