COVID lockdowns lifted in Bangladesh

Although the virus is rampant in Bangladesh, officials there still lifted anti-virus lockdowns.

Buses and trains all but disappeared in the country's capital, Dhaka, on July 1 after the government ordered lockdowns. Markets were also shut because of the lockdowns.

Despite earlier restrictions, virus deaths still surpassed 200 each day and daily infections were still around 11,000.

Yesterday, some 200 deaths and more than 11,000 infections were reported.

The Bangladeshi government said the lifting of lockdowns was aimed at letting people celebrate a festival, which is going to boost the economy.

But that has experts exasperated, saying the government should have taken into account the country's COVID-related infections and deaths before making the decision.

Experts said the month after the year's major Islamic festival will be a critical time for the country to try to avoid a catastrophic situation.
