The new ambassador, Qin Gang today described the two countries' relationship as contentious and increasingly competitive.
He avoided making any criticism after arriving to take up his new post.
Qin's arrival comes as relations with the United States nosedived, with both sides still remaining at odds over a variety of issues, including trade, technology, cybersecurity and human rights.
To date, Biden has yet to nominate anyone to become the U.S.' ambassador to China. But Nicholas Burns, a former ambassador to NATO and State Department spokesperson, is expected to be nominated.
Qin now replaced Cui Tiankai, who had been China's ambassador to the U.S. for eight years straight amid a steady deterioration in the two countries' ties.
