It was at 6:30 p.m. local time when a Danish man armed with a bow and arrow fired arrows at shoppers in a small Norwegian town of Kongsberg, 66 kilometres southwest of Oslo.
The police reportedly caught wind of this accident 15 minutes prior to the incident and arrest the suspect about 30 minutes after that attack.
The assailant is said to have launched the assault inside a Coop Extra supermarket on Kongsberg's west side.
Among those injured: An off-duty police officer who was in that store at the time.
The bow and arrow attack left 5 people deceased.
This attack had authorities cordoning off several parts of the town, lest the situation took a turn for the worse.
Residents were immediately ordered to stay indoors so that authorities could start examining the scene and gather evidence.
The Kongsberg police chief said the police apprehended the man subsequently. However, he has yet to be questioned. Aas said the incident was one of the most serious attacks in Norway.
Prime Minister Erna Solberg echoed that sentiment. She said the attack was a barbarous act, describing reports of the incident as horrifying.
Town officials invited people who were affected as a result of this attack, as well as the bereaved, to gather for support at a local hotel.
Mass killing is a rarity in Norway. The country's last, also the worst peacetime slaughter in history happened back on July 22, 2011, when right-wing extremist Anders Breivik set off a bomb in the capital of Oslo, killing eight people. Another 69 victims were killed on the tiny Utoya Island, where he stalked the mostly teenage members of the Labour Party's youth wing.
