Boris Johnson may have misled Parliament in Partygate inquiry

Former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson is adamant he did not mislead Parliament in the "Partygate" scandal.

"There's no evidence to show that I must have believed that illegal events were taking place because I didn't, and I thought we were fighting COVID to the best of our ability in very difficult circumstances in Number 10, in the cabinet office, night and day," Johnson said in an interview with Sky News.

However, Britain's Committee of Privileges said there is evidence the House of Commons may have been misled in a preliminary report.

The conclusions are based on witness statements, WhatsApp messages, emails and pictures taken by a Downing Street photographer.

While Johnson is no longer prime minister he remains a member of Parliament.

So he could face a recall election if he is found in contempt.

Johnson has agreed to appear before the committee later this month when he's expected to respond to the findings.

Since late 2021, news reports of his lockdown-breaking parties at Downing Street have dogged the former prime minister, who resigned last year because of the scandal.
