A packed boat capsized off the coast of San Diego in California, breaking apart. Three people were killed and dozens were hospitalised.
The boat was reportedly being used in a suspected human smuggling operation. It capsized on Sunday. Rescuers say there were dozens of people being left in the water, drowning.
A total of 27 people were transported to hospitals with “a wide variety of injuries” including hypothermia.
Smugglers were believed to have been bringing people from Mexico, Honduras, Guatemala and other Central American countries due to the pandemic. The Trump administration was adamant the asylum seekers had to be expelled from the country immediately, without providing an opportunity to them to seek asylum.
