BlackBerry discontinues service on classic smartphones

A word of warning tonight from the smartphone company BlackBerry as it officially discontinued service on its classic smartphones yesterday.

In a statement released on December 22, BlackBerry reminded users of the development, hinting at pulling the plug on all services not running on Android software starting on Tuesday, including the BlackBerry 10, 7.1 OS and all earlier versions.

At its apogee back in 2009 to 2010, BlackBerry's phones comprised 20 percent of smartphones sold in the global smartphone market, with an even higher percentage in the U.S., where more than 50 million smartphones were sold at that time.

However, with the rapid technological growth, and despite boasting physical keyboards, BlackBerry's phones were gradually replaced by iPhones, which boast the same functions, in addition to the more user-friendly iMessage.

What's more, back in 2010, BlackBerry's phones were once banned by India on account of fears that BlackBerry's ultra-secure email and messages services could be abused by terrorists or militants looking for ways to create instability. In the end, BlackBerry decided to provide Indian authorities with lawful access to their messaging services data.

Currently, the company, which is said to be an "enterprise software and cybersecurity company", still employs thousands of workers and pulled in about a billion dollars in revenue last year despite having been falling behind in technology.

But, with Apple's phone sales outstripping BlackBerry's for good, it is believed that this does smack of BlackBerry's incompetence to catch up.
