Biden speaks from experience: Get vaccinated

{O/C} And now out of isolation, President Joe Biden used his bout of COVID to entreat his fellow Americans to get vaccinated, warning the pandemic is to linger on.

{RVO}

{Soundbite}

JOE BIDEN, United States President:

I've just tested negative for COVID-19 after isolating for five days.

(Upsound - applause)

My symptoms were mild, my recovery was quick, and I'm feeling great.

COVID isn't gone, but even with cases climbing in this country, COVID deaths are down nearly 90 percent.

When my predecessor got COVID, he had to get helicoptered to Walter Reed Medical Center. He was severely ill. Thankfully, he recovered. When I got COVID, I worked from upstairs of the White House, in the offices upstairs and for that five-day period.

The difference is vaccinations, of course, but also three new tools free to all and widely available. You don't need to be a President to get these tools used for your defence.

{VO}

The virus has slaughtered more than 1 million people in the country and continues to affect daily life.

But just as Biden stressed, vaccination is the key to a speedy recovery.

{O/C} Meanwhile, the president is expected to speak with his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, at 8:30 p.m. Hong Kong time.

But compounding the already tense situation is House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's potential tour through Taiwan, the renegade state that's now a powder keg as Beijing has warned of swift countermeasures should that visit materialise.
