U.S. President Joe Biden today set the stakes for his first foreign trip as U.S. President. Biden, meanwhile, also warned that tensions between the U.S. and Russia will only exacerbate if Russia continues to ignore U.S. warnings.
On the first day of his first overseas trip as U.S. President, Joe Biden’s first stop was a visit with U.S. troops and their families at Royal Air Force Mildenhall.
Biden:
The United States is back, and democracies of the world are standing together to tackle the toughest challenges and the issues that matter most to our future. They were committed to leading this trend.
Voiceover:
The President’s trip is mainly aimed at steadying European allies deeply shaken by his predecessor, Donald Trump.
Many believe Biden wants the U.S. and the European Union to coalesce, so as to form a group to compete with China.
Set to meet with British Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, later today, the President is expected to express great concern with Britain’s future after Brexit. The President has been dead set against the Brexit movement, and the British exodus from the European Union.
Biden also utilised the speech to express his concern over Russia’s authoritarianism, and a wide range of issues, such as Russian cyberattacks on American businesses, and several Russian dissidents languishing in jail.
Suffice it to say, ties between Washington and Moscow are at a low point. The Kremlin continues to accuse the West of double standards, while Biden keeps demanding Russia play by the rules, or risk isolation.
Biden will have his hands full attending a large number of meetings: After meeting with British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, he will be headed to Brussels, where he will meet with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, and attend a G7 summit.
He will wrap up his trip with a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
