An Australian court today rejected a challenge to the federal government’s draconian power to ban international travel.
The ban is aimed at preventing most citizens from going in and out of Australia so that they won’t bring COVID-19 home.
Australia is alone among developed democratic countries in preventing its citizens and permanents residents from leaving the country except in “exceptional circumstances”.
Most Australians have been stranded in the country since the ban was enacted in March last year.
The judges ruled that interpretation of the law would frustrate Parliament’s clear intentions when lawmakers created the emergency powers in the Biosecurity Act in 2015.
