Video footage posted on social media revealed the deadly deluge happening early Tuesday, dragging cars and houses through the streets and sending water swirling through the area. Conscious passengers in two buses sinking into a swollen river were forced to clamber out the bus and scramble to safety.
Now, more than 24 hours after the mudslides and survivors are picking up the pieces as they hope their loved ones will turn out to be still alive.
The mayor of the German-influenced city nestled deep in the mountainous areas in Rio de Janeiro admitted at least 35 people have not been located as of yet. An estimate for the number of people missing is yet to be available as recovery efforts are underway.
Petropolis has been serving as a safe space for people who yearn to flee the summer heat. It's also a popular destination for tourists keen to explore the city nicknamed the "Imperial City."
