Horror gripped residents in the New Zealand capital of Wellington overnight when a deadly fire an entire hostel, killing at least 6 people.
The fire erupted at about 12:30 in the morning.
At least 52 people in the four-storey Loafers Lodge hostel were evacuated, but firefighters are still looking for the unaccounted for.
In the aftermath, the exterior walls of the top storey was charred and the roof collapsed, leaving behind debris and making the area unsafe.
Residents admitted, fire alarms would regularly sound in the building for different reasons so they thought it was just another false alarm.
The Loafers Lodge offered basic and affordable rooms with shared lounges, kitchens and laundry facilities to people of a wide range of ages.
It has no fire sprinklers.
Police say the cause of the fire is still under investigation, but they didn't believe it had been deliberately set.
