The al-Shabab extremist organisation has claimed responsibility for the attacks, which it says were aimed directly at the education ministry.

It claimed the ministry was an "enemy base" receiving non-Muslim countries' support for removing Somali children from the Islamic faith.

The blasts erupted when the president, prime minister and other senior officials were meeting to discuss expanding efforts to combat violent extremism, especially al-Shabab.

The President says the country remains at war with the extremist group, and "we are winning."
