Activists respond to US book bans

{O/C} In America, many books were censored on an unprecedented scale last year.

As such, many organisations have spoken out against the book bans.

The non-profit organisation PEN America found that dozens of bills have been proposed to restrict classroom reading and discussion. The contentious laws mainly focus on sexuality, gender identity or race.

One of the books subject to the laws is "1619 Project", which was formerly known as a New York Times magazine issue centering around slavery. It was released as a book last fall, but has since been banned from classrooms.

The responses to the book bans come from organisations large and small, and even from political activists.

Donations, including one from the CEO of Penguin Random House involving 500,000 USD, have been made as they try to mobilise opposition as part of an anti-banning initiative.

Many believe it is the definitions of certain words that are deemed profane or vulgar, thereby prompting officials to ban those books.
