The first unravelled in Chicago, at around 9:30 on Halloween night.

As many as 15 people, including three kids aged 3, 11 and around 13, were wounded in a drive-by shooting in Chicago's Garfield Park neighbourhood.

The rest of the victims were adults in their 30s to 50s. Sources say another person was struck by a car.

According to amateur videos, at least two gunmen were involved.

Then it was in Newark where two police officers suffered gunshot wounds on Tuesday afternoon in a residential neighbourhood a mile away from Newark International Airport.

The two officers returned fire as the gunman, whom they were chasing after for another shooting, fled into an apartment building.

One officer was shot in the leg while the other officer's neck was rattled by a bullet that was stuck in the shoulder.

Terror-struck residents have been ordered to stay indoors as police have cordoned off nearby streets in search of the gunman.
