93rd Annual Academy Awards show held

Updated: Apr 27, 2021

The 93rd Annual Academy Awards show for this year was held yesterday, and as usual, it encompassed the good and great, despite anti-virus and social distancing measures being in place. People were riveted as a western movie “Nomadland”, which is directed by China-born Chloe Zhao, went on a track which propelled it to fame. But, some were disappointed as Anthony Hopkins “robbed” the best actor prize for his wonderful performance in the dementia drama “The Father”.

Surprises were all around in the show this year as the movie “Nomadland” was given the best picture award. Despite being widely expected as this year’s winner of that award, it still grabbed people’s attention because of the director of the movie – China-born Chloe Zhao. Using less than 5 million dollars and non-professional and amateur actors, Zhao’s movie won this year’s top honour.

Held in Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, the show still had throngs of onlookers waiting to get the latest updates despite social distancing measures being in place.

A noteworthy change in the show in recent years is more biracial and multiracial actors and more women took centre stage.

And the best actress award also went to an actress, Frances McDormand, who cast as the woman who left for the United States in search for a better life after becoming a widow in that movie.

Accepting the best director award, Zhao shared a few words on how she were hell-bent on making the whole movie a success, and encouraged people who are dedicated to making everything a success to never call it quits, because this is extraordinary crucial to accomplishing everything, no matter what, “I have always found goodness in the people I met everywhere I went in the world. This is for anyone who has the faith and the courage to hold on to the goodness in themselves and to hold on the goodness in other no matter the goodness in themselves and to hold on the goodness in other no matter how difficult it is to do that.” Said Zhao.

Next, the best actor award went to Anthony Hopkins. Originally, Chadwick Boseman was expected to posthumously win the best actor award, but his fans were disappointed as Anthony Hopkins “robbed” that prize. It was literally a surprise for many.

He beat out other rivals for his performance in the movie “The Father”, which is a dementia drama. However, this year’s show came with a bit of anticlimax, as he was not present to accept the award. Hours after the last award was given out, Hopkins made a belated victory speech, in which he paid tribute to Boseman, who died in August last year, and was expected to posthumously win the best actor award.
