The perpetrator was a 34-year-old former Police Major General who unleashed a hail of gunfire on children inside the daycare centre in the northeastern town of Nongbua Lamphu.
Witnesses say staff members at the centre had locked the door when they saw the gunman approaching, but to no avail.
The gunman then moved his reign of terror back home where he murdered his wife and child, and committed suicide.
In the aftermath, bloodied sleeping mats were strewn across the floor as distraught families wept in anguish.
At least 37 people perished in the attack, mostly children, including pre-schoolers.
This is the deadliest shooting in the nation's history.
Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-o-cha expressed deep sorrow and sent condolences to the victims' families.
