(2021-2022 Policy Address) HK's status as an international aviation hub entails consolidation

Chief Executive Carrie Lam said in her policy address that she remains confident that Hong Kong's status as an international aviation hub could be consolidated and enhanced.

This, as the construction of the Three Runway System at the Hong Kong International Airport is now underway.

A key infrastructure project that underpins the transformation of a "city airport" into an "Airport city", Mrs. Lam stressed.

The Three Runway System is key to enhancing the competitiveness of the Hong Kong International Airport, as it is expected to increase capacity thereof.

The reclamation of some 650 hectares of land has been largely completed, as have the pavement works for the 3,800-metre Third Runway. The commissioning of the Third Runway is targeted for 2022, and the full completion of the runway is slated for 2024.

The Airport Authority Hong Kong has also embarked upon a new project aimed at improving the efficiency of the airport, thereby enhancing overall passenger experience.

Under the auspices of the Central Government and the Guangdong province, Mrs. Lam proposed last year that the city can leverage the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau bridge to strengthen Hong Kong-Zhuhai airport co-operation, with Hong Kong's Airport Authority injecting equity in the Zhuhai airport on the basis of market principles.

Now, the government is also full steam ahead to endeavour to establish a high-end aviation industrial cluster in Zhuhai, in collaboration with the Guangdong province.

This encompasses fields such as aircraft maintenance engineering, manufacturing and distribution of aircraft components, and research on aircraft engineering.

The Hong Kong International Aviation Academy will also play an active role in nurturing technical talents for the aviation sectors of Hong Kong, Zhuhai and the Greater Bay Area.
